To Guitar Teachers
My 13 guitar trios Jouer ↔ Parler ↔ Ecouter (Playing ↔ Talking ↔ Listening) are intended for children between the ages of about eight to twelve years who have had lessons on the guitar for at least six months.
Designed to appeal to children’s love of having fun, the pieces are kept as easy to play on the guitar as possible and dispense with something most beginners have the most difficulty with, sensing a common rhythmic pulse within a given meter.
The freedom in sensing time gained in this way is used to really listen to one another and to learn how to respond in order to experience the importance of distinct shadings in loudness and, in an essential way, incorporate the voice (the magic of counting!), the body and more contemporary playing techniques.
Each of the trios, which can be performed alone or in any combination, works its way to a dramatically prepared punch line which should be clearly emphasized. In this way, the pieces can be what they want to be to players and audience alike: stimulating and – in the best sense of the word – entertaining.
