With the Lieder auf der Flucht for voice and piano the Darmstadt composer Alois Bröder succeeded sensitive character pieces. The lyric poetry of old-Chinese poets was fitted out in music with those "Jade sounds", which one remembers of Mahler and Toch still well. Bröders sensitive approach was nevertheless without each cliché and without wrong mawkishness which is usually suitable for such settings to music.
